What is Playfest?
It’s November here at Harborfields, and a lot is happening. The first quarter finished up last week and Thanksgiving break is around the corner. It is also during this time, that playfest submissions are due. “What even is playfest?” asked Ella Pastorelli, a sixth grade OMS student, who will be in high school in 2 short years. This article is your guide to the art that is Playfest, and all the fantastic opportunities that come along with it!
Each year, Harborfields hosts an event called playfest. Every student is given the opportunity to write a short play of approximately 30 minutes. Mrs. Gavin, the teacher advisor, than picks one show per grade to cast, rehearse, and compete against the other grades. The thing that is so special about playfest is that anyone can do it. Actor or not, the entire student body is encouraged to get involved. Augie Kolmer, an athlete and the Junior class president says he’s “excited to be included in this years show for the first time.”
You might be thinking “how else can I get involved in such a great event if I don’t want to be on stage?” Because playfest is entirely student directed positions such as choreographer, stage manager, stage crew and directing are all ways to give a hand in production.
The more you get involved in high school, the more you take out of it. It is fundraisers like playfest that students remember. So if you’d like to get more involved and have fun in the process, playfest auditions are this coming Monday and Tuesday. Happy Playfest! See you in January for an update on what each grade has produced!
