Grammy Nominations For This Sunday's Awards

Nominations for the 2018 Grammy Awards were announced in late November, and to say the public and the musicians were excited, is an understatement. The 2018 Grammys will be a big year for the awards, seeing as it is the 60th year of running the Grammys. Artists and their fans took to twitter about their nominations, as well as thanking people for the support.

New and upcoming R&B artist, Khalid, was nominated for three Grammys. He is most known for his song Location off of his debut album, American Teen. He took to twitter after the nomination announcements, quoting a tweet from years prior stating, “I want to go to the Grammys one day.” with the response, “Wow. I did it.” His reaction is only one of many artists who found out about their numerous nominations. It is really interesting to see an artist reach one of their goals, and he is no exception. With his talent, it is no surprise that he was given this incredible opportunity.

Moana was also nominated again for Grammys for their soundtrack as well as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songwriting for How Far I’ll Go, sung by Auli’i Cravalho. Many people are excited they were renominated, and that it is well deserved.

The Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen was nominated for a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, as well as Hello, Dolly! and Come From Away. Ben Platt, from the original cast of Dear Evan Hansen, responded with an excited gif along with his tweet of, “When you wake up a Grammy nominee”. No one can blame him for being as excited as he is, that is a huge accomplishment! He recently left this Broadway production, and many of his fans are excited to see what he will do next.

Lorde who is mostly known for her single Royals, is up for Album of the Year for her newest album Melodrama. Her response to the nomination announcement on twitter, was, “What a group. Thank you.” This nomination is well deserved, after her album has gotten very popular and has an extensive tracklist filled with a range of different songs. She is up against all male artists, which is definitely an accomplishment to be proud of. She is representing girl power in the music industry.

Pop music is the stereotypical genre that people think of when they see a song on the radio. Other genres, like rock music have also been on the air for years, but now, new genres are beginning to be broadcasted on radio stations. Alternative music has begun to enter radio stations and become more popular among the public. Artists like Twenty One Pilots — who won an award at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards — and Imagine Dragons are rising in the iTunes charts all of the time.

Imagine Dragons are even up for Grammy nominations this year. One of the awards they are up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song Thunder. The song has been featured on television shows, like Riverdale, a show on the CW network. Most people know this band for their song Radioactive, from their debut album, Night Visions.

Musicians, composers, broadway stars, and their fans alike are all talking about who they think will win awards from each of the categories. The excitement is inevitable, and makes the beginning of the new year eventful for all of the nominees. The 60th Annual Grammy Awards will be taking place this Sunday, January 28th.
