The Downfall of Gossip Girl
I think we can all agree that the first season of a show is typically the best. The storyline just starts out and everything is new and exciting. Well, season 1 of Gossip Girl is no different. At a certain point in TV shows, they start adding unnecessary drama or plots just to keep the show running. And honestly, it starts to get annoying and boring. Gossip girl is no different. The show was only really interesting until season 3. I believe they tried to add plot twists in season 5 and 6 just to keep people engaged; like revealing Bart Bass faked his death. Season 1 was filled with drama and relationships, proving it is the best season.
One point to prove season 1 is the best was that the Serena and Dan storyline development was the best. Dan Humphery, nicknamed “Lonely Boy” started out as a nobody, but grew his relationship with the “it” girl of Constance, Serena Van Der Woodsen. The way that their relationship developed with her having to defend him to all the other popular people she was friends with, specifically Blair Waldorf, was one of the most interesting relationship plots in the whole show (aside from Blair and Chuck Bass). By the end of season 1, Serena and Dan were broken up by Georgina Sparks, but they did end up getting married in season 6, showing that they were meant to be together. “I was so sad when Serena and Dan broke up in season 1.” - Everly Johnson.
After season 1, Jenny Humphery (Dan’s younger sister) had horrible character development. Although the style change was because of Taylor Momsen's rebranding in real life, the writers of the show decided to rebrand her character as well. They made her very rebellious and annoying. Her character became such a stereotypical high school rebel and it was just boring.
In season 1, the characters of the show were in high school. They graduated at the end of season 2 and then moved into their adult lives. There was drama with relationships and parents in season 1 which was justified because they were in high school. Once the relationship drama transferred into season 5, it was seen before and boring. It made the audience lose interest because they felt that the characters were too old to be acting like they were still 16. “Serena and Nate Archibald getting back together for the 5th time was so unnecessary.” - Gigi O’sullivan.
The show became almost unbearable to watch, even to the point I stopped watching for 3 months before completing it fully. This just proves that season 1 was the best out of all of them. So, until next time. XOXO - Gossip Girl.
