Newsday’s Athlete of the Week is Harborfields Student, Olivia Eusanio

Congratulations to Olivia Eusanio for being named Newsday’s Athlete of the Week. Eusanio is a dominant player on the Harborfields Varsity Field Hockey team. She is significantly carrying all of Long Island's girls' Field Hockey points with 43, scoring 26 goals and 17 powerful assists. Last week, the midfielder recorded her 100th point and is now standing with 105 points- A record no one else in Harborfields history has ever come close to. Olivia states that she would not be this far if it weren't for her close connection with her teammates."Going into the season, getting to 100 was a goal of mine," Eusanio said. "I don't think many people realize a lot of my points are assists, so having a good connection with my teammates has helped me this season."

Beyond her Athletic skills, Olivia’s dedication to her teammates and the community sets her apart. She is the Vice President of the Harborfields Athletic Council, where she helps organize events to give back to charity and the Harborfields community. She is also a part of Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) where she and other Harborfields athletes visit Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School and Washington Drive Elementary School to talk to younger students about mental health, bullying, and alcohol prevention. She mentions how she used to look up to AHA when she was younger “I remember when I was younger, students from AHA coming in, and I wanted to be just like them when I got older," Eusanio said. "I don't take this opportunity for granted. I enjoy talking to the students and connecting with them."

Harborfields Field Hockey coach Lauren Desiderio says Eusanio is “The full package” because "She is always trying to help others improve on the field and give them advice," and that “She's the perfect student-athlete you hope to have on your team."

Olivia also has big plans for the future. She is currently committed to the University of Richmond to play field hockey, which is her dream school and her mother’s alma mater. "When I was looking for colleges, Richmond became my dream school. It is a cool way to honor my mom," Olivia said.

Currently, Olivia and the Harborfields Field Hockey Team are on to the semis! They play next at home on Friday, November 1, at 4pm! Good luck tornados!
