Red Ribbon Week
Harborfields and the SADD club have teamed up with Comsewogue to celebrate Red Ribbon week this week! The purpose of Red Ribbon week is to promote the prevention of substance abuse.
Mrs. Ambrosio, the advisor for the SADD club stated, “SADD is participating in Red Ribbon week to help bring awareness to our school community about substance abuse. It’s important for students to understand that they always have a choice to live a healthy drug free lifestyle!”
Red Ribbon week is celebrated from October 23-31st, and is the nation's largest drug prevention program. This program was created after the death of DEA agent Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was tortured and killed by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985.
Special Agent Camarena’s high school friend and Congressman Duncan Hunter, created “Camarena Clubs” and started wearing a red ribbon to show their opposition to drugs. In 1988, President Reagan, the first lady and the National Family Partnership coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week.
Ever Since then the Red Ribbon campaign has gained great importance, and NFP continues to partner with families, schools and communities across the country every year.
A parent from the Harborfields community has graciously donated 150 paper red ribbons with positive messages on them, they are being displayed on the outside of the cafeteria so make sure to stop by and read some!
