The Princess Switch: Switched Again Review

The Princess Switch is the best Christmas Netflix movie and when I found out there would be a sequel I was ecstatic. But oftentimes the sequel is never as good as the original movie. Would this be the case?

My love for Vanessa Hudgens’ characters in this movie universe is unmatched. She plays the loveable characters of Stacy De Novo, a baker from Chicago who falls in love with a prince and she plays Lady Margaret Delacourt, Duchess of Montenaro. It can be difficult for any actor or actress to play multiple roles in a movie or show and Hudgens does it perfectly. With the sequel, Hudgens adds yet another character to the universe, Fiona Pembroke, a third look-a-like to the already iconic duo. While it may be biased that I love the character because of our shared name, Hudgens does a great job at portraying her and has a cool accent while doing so.

The movie started off with the fact that Margaret and Kevin had broken up which was of course, disappointing. But you can imagine it can’t be easy in a long distance relationship with a woman who is about to be crowned queen. It was amazing to see them rekindle their love throughout the movie. Also the advancement in the relationship between Stacy and Prince Edward was adorable. Marriage life gets a little tough for them as they are both so busy and Stacy feels the pressure to be perfect since she is in the view of the people of their country a lot.

However, the sequel did as expected with most movies, it wasn’t as good as the first one. I believe the dialogue was boring at times. There wasn’t enough humor and exploring through the personalities of the characters. While we got a look into Fiona’s personality and desire for money, they didn’t develop her character enough and left things a bit unanswered with her. In the movie, Fiona kidnaps Stacy, thinking she was Margaret. Once again Stacy and Margaret had switched places so that Margret could talk with Kevin to work out their problems. Fiona wanted to switch places so that she could be crowned queen. With the obvious resemblance, it would be easy to pull off.

However what she did was treason and she wasn’t exactly punished for it. It would’ve been an interesting scene of her being arrested or taken out by the guards. The movie also didn’t have the same excitement it did in the first one. It wasn’t personal enough. In the first movie the characters went out, did Christmas activities, laughed and overall the characters all had a good time.

The second movie had a feeling of stress that was portrayed onto the audience. All the characters were stressed and running around trying to adjust to their lives and that took up too much of the storyline and I believe there could have been a more personal touch. Watching them be stressed made me as an audience feel stressed. I was trying to keep up with what was bothering Margaret and Stacy and the other not as major characters.

I only found out from another article and from Twitter that characters from A Christmas Prince, another great Christmas movie, made a cameo in the sequel. While I’m disappointed in myself for not catching Queen Amber and King Richard of Aldovia at Margaret’s coronation, I’m glad to see they live in the same universe, the NCCU (Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe). Since there is a third A Christmas Prince movie coming, will it maybe tie into the third The Princess Switch they have planned?

While the movie was not as great as I was hoping for, it is still a movie I would recommend. Netflix Christmas movies might be cliche but, they’re so entertaining!
