2024 Oscar Nominations: The Potential Winners and the State of Cinema.

Written by Jack Wilkens, 1/26/24

The 96th Academy Awards are upon us and as usual the nominations are creating a lot of buzz. Oppenheimer has been nominated for 13 awards, followed by Poor Things with 11 nominations. Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, The Holdovers, American Fiction, and Maestro have also received multiple “nods.”

Interestingly, no Best Director Nomination for Greta Gerwig (Barbie), or Best Actor/Actress for Leonardo DiCaprio or Margot Robbie. Also the “International feature film” category seems somewhat backhanded, as it feels like it is only there to stop an international film from winning Best Picture like Parasite did in 2020.

Visual Effects and Cinematography is a close race, with each film in the running showcases amazing visuals and eye-candy.

As with any awards night, I have some predictions: Oppenheimer will likely win Best Picture, Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Cinematography. Poor Things will win Best Actress and Supporting Actor. For Barbie Best Supporting Actress, Production Design, and Original Song. Across the Spider Verse will win best Visual Effects. The Holdovers Best Original Screenplay, and Maestro for Best Makeup/Hairstyling. We shall see if my predictions were correct on March 10th 2024. Lets hope this year turns out like 2023, and not 2022…
