Fires continue to ravage Australia, displaces thousands of citizens and tourists
Conditions are worsening in Australia as wildfires continue to burn on every side of the country. The summer heat and lack of rain has caused fires the combined size of South Carolina to develop since September.
The worst thing about the burns is the lack of coverage of the event until January. There have been several similar events that have gained coverage but have affected less people. In September-October last year, it was common knowledge that the wildfires in California were severe.
The thing is, the fire in Australia is 92 times bigger.
Contrary to most people’s beliefs, the fires started when spring was still the dominating season in Australia. Since September, wildfires have been growing at an unprecedented rate. Just this month, over 10 million acres (about 15,000) square miles, or twice the size of Massachusetts. In all, around 2,000 homes have been burned and 27 people have been killed. In the southern and northern edges of the country, the fires are most impressive. More than half (51%) of the total fires reside in the Southeastern province of New South Wales. There, the capital, Sydney, is literally surrounded by two large fires in the surrounding Blue Mountains and other National parks.
Since Christmas, support for the cause has been astounding. Numerous celebrities have donated at least a half a million dollars, including Elton John, Shawn Mendez, and many others who have contributed to the cause.
It is a disturbing start to the new year, but as the fires in Australia start to subside support is enhancing for the cause.
