What We Have All Been Waiting For

Yesterday something that we have all been waiting for was brought to my attention, a vaccine.

Pfizer just announced positive early results from its coronavirus vaccine trial, cementing the lead in a frenzied global race that has unfolded at record-breaking speed.

This vaccine has proven to be more than 90% effective. This pandemic has taken over all of our lives since March now, killing more than 1.2 million people. The news of this vaccine was so relieving for so many Americans and people all over the world affected by this pandemic. Senior, Maya Salzman stated that, “This is something that we have all been waiting for.”

The question that we are all concerned about is whether or not we would be able to receive the vaccine and how many people would be able to receive it? Senior Allison Brown stated, “I am happy to see that they have a vaccine and am excited to see when it will be released.”

A concern that many do not know about with this vaccine is the wide distribution of this vaccine will be  a logistical challenge. Pfizer’s vaccine is made with mRNA, the doses will need to be kept at ultra cold temperatures. While Pfizer has developed a special cooler to transport the vaccine, equipped with GPS-enabled thermal sensors, it remains unclear where people will receive the shots, and what role the government will play in distribution.

Senior Lizzie Kennedy stated, “There is a lot at stake.” Most health experts say that the world will need many treatments and vaccines to bring an end to the pandemic.
