Why do we expect Covid-19 Infections to Increase in Colder Months?
There are three major reasons why the infection rates of Covid-19 will increase in these upcoming colder months. First, the virus that causes Covid-19 is a Coronavirus, Coronavirus’s spreads more in colder months. This is seen also in the flu and other respiratory viruses. So we expect to see the same problem in this novel Coronavirus too. The same precautions as usual that people continue to ignore are necessary, Senior Maya Salzman, stated that “We need to wear masks as much as possible.”
In winter months the air is less humid causing the particles from the virus to linger in the air for a longer period of time. Also, our nasal membranes are much dryer making them more vulnerable to infection.
Also, during the winter months most people spend a lot more time indoors. Senior, Lizzie Kennedy also stated, “When indoors keep windows open. It is known to reduce the spread drastically as compared to no ventilation whatsoever.” We know that being outdoors can reduce the transmission of Covid-19 significantly, but now that this won't be an option the infection rate will further increase. Being outdoors can reduce the transmission of Covid-19 by 18-19 times, this is because the particles that are diffused from this virus get circulated in the air. Senior, Allison Brown, stated “We need to stay outdoors as much as we can during these colder months.”
This idea of the infection rate to increase in winter months has been anticipated since the beginning. This goes along with the seasonal variation that is seen in most viruses just like it. Be safe and be aware of your actions during these times.
