Vandalism in Floyd's Hometown
In recent news, a mural of George Floyd in Houston was vandalized. This vandalism was carried out overnight and ultimately defaced Floyd’s face in the mural. This painting in Floyd’s hometown was covered with a racial epithet which was then covered up and the painting restored by the artist who created it. Senior Allison Brown stated, “It is unbelievable that people would even think to vandalize that.”
A little background is, Floyd died after Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for more than 9 minutes last year. Chauvin was found guilty Tuesday of all three charges against him in one of the significant trials of the Black Lives Matter era.
Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after Floyd's death in police custody last May. Senior Lizzie Kennedy stated, “So many people are relieved that justice was served (although the time it took).”Derek Chauvin will later be sentenced in June. It is necessary to take into account the affects of this trial and how much justice was gained. Senior Ciana Massaria stated that, “We must continue to stick up for what is right.”
This vandalism was completely uncalled for and many in Floyd’s hometown were left in shock. It has been noted that if people continue to vandalize they will be held accountable.
