"Bohemian Rhapsody" and Others Annihilate the Golden Globes

The contender we never saw coming.

Last night’s Golden Globes Awards proved that critical reception is no match for audience love, as Bohemian Rhapsody has taken Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actor (Drama) at the 76th Golden Globes. Critically panned, the film currently stands at a 49 on Metacritic; however, audiences have given it a different reaction, as it has an A Cinemascore, 8.3 IMDb rating, and has grossed nearly $200 million domestically and $750 million worldwide as of now.

Awards experts weren’t even expecting the film to be nominated for Best Picture, let alone win. This triumphant victory puts the film in an excellent position for the Academy Awards, the nominations for which will be announced on January 22nd.

Elsewhere at the Golden Globes Awards, Green Book swept the competition off the field, taking home Best Picture (Comedy or Musical), Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, beating out strong competition among the likes of Vice, The Favourite, and Crazy Rich Asians.

The HFPA has already received criticism for picking relatively “crowd-pleasing” films, choosing entertainment over artistry—a statement that I disagree with, as Roma took home awards for Best Director and Best Foreign Film, and is not a film to be considered as a “crowd-pleaser.”

Many have noted the big loss for A Star is Born, the film that many experts and analysts predicted to be an absolute shoo-in—which ended up taking only Best Original Song for “Shallows.”
