Kneeling for the National Anthem. Is it Right?
Kneeling for the National Anthem during sporting events was a big controversy over the past few years. Ex-49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick started this protest on September 1st, 2016 when the San Francisco 49ers took on the San Diego Chargers. This brought up many debates on whether or not this was the right thing to do.
Kaepernick started a movement across the nation with players kneeling while the anthem was played. The entire Dallas Cowboys organization kneeled while the anthem was played in Arizona. The Cowboys did this as a sign of unity. They locked arms and all took a knee when the flag was un rolled.
President Donald Trump was not a supporter of this movement. The President said that any player who kneels for the National Anthem should be fired. This is why the whole Cowboys organization kneeled because they wanted to show the President that they all stick together.
Even military veterans have spoken out about these protests saying that they fight for the right to protest. They started a hashtag that said #VeteransforKaepernick. In 2018 the NFL commissioner put out a new rule that all players are required to stand during the National Anthem or they could choose to stay in the locker room. Some people consider this to be a violation of their freedom to protest but others say it is more respectful to this country and our military.
Kaepernick was released by the 49ers in 2017. He signed a deal with Nike and is getting another chance at the NFL. People debated on and on about this controversial event. This is something that will always be around and people will always do what they feel is right.
