TikTok Rejects Microsoft
President Trump on August 6th put out an executive order against TikTok. The order is to ban all transactions with the app within 45 days. It has now been 40 days since the executive order was issued. A week after he issued this first executive order he issued another separate order against ByteDance. ByteDance is a Chinese multinational internet tech company, the order against them was that they have 90 days to leave from its American assets.
Since these executive orders have been issued ByteDance has been looking to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations to an American company. If they didn’t find an American company to sell it to, the app would be banned in the United States. The two main companies that were in the bidding were Microsoft and Oracle, both being big internet technology companies.
Microsoft, one of the biggest tech companies, got turned down by TikTok. TikTok decided to make Oracle their new technology partner. They rejected all offers from Microsoft. It was not made clear why TikTok decided to make Oracle their new partner.
Now that Oracle is TikTok’s new tech partner, it means that Oracle will have the majority of the ownership of the app. Microsoft believes that their proposal would have been good for the users of the app. Oracle has yet not said anything that they are going to do with TikTok’s technology.
President Donald Trump has said that he supports Oracle and thinks that they are a great company, now we just have to wait and see what Oracle has to offer on the app. In a NY Times article, it says, “Last month, Mr. Trump said he would support Oracle buying TikTok. He called Oracle a ‘great company’”.
On Friday, September 18, 2020, the commerce department announced that it would be banning the download of two Chinese owned apps, TikTok and Wechat. This would make Apple and Google remove it from their app stores.
Many TikTok user’s feelings have been played with since Trump’s executive order came out. Many of the users have been thinking that TikTok was going to get banned. We hope that TikTok doesn’t get banned because many teens and adults use it daily as a form of entertainment.
