Is Yoga Better Than General Gym?
Here at Harborfields High School, we offer different ways to receive gym credits in order to graduate. These classes include your stereotypical gym class and yoga. Most students, especially in previous years, stick with taking the general gym class to gain these credits, but recently many more students have decided to take yoga instead.
There is a huge argument between the students at Harborfields about which class is better. Students in yoga love it and will argue with students in general gym to take it instead. Students sticking with general gym will argue differently as to why they won’t take yoga and why they think that general gym is better. This leaves many students conflicted over which gym class to take.
HF student Opinions
Julianna German stuck with the general gym; she said, “I think general gym is better because you get to try out different sports and do it with your friends. I didn’t take yoga because it’s too relaxing and I feel like if I had it in the middle of the day I would go to my next class really tired.”
Emma Kassner Strauss, who also takes general gym said, “I did yoga when I was in camp a couple of years ago and I hated it. I like general gym better because I get to play volleyball in the winter.”
Zoe Sanders, who takes yoga said, “I wanted to try yoga out and see if it would be something I was interested in- it’s something I’ve always wanted to work on, now I want to stick with it. I do like it better than gym because I feel like I actually get things out of it rather than just going to gym class. It helps me practice grounding myself and taking time to remind myself what I have to be grateful for in my life.”
So which is better?
Both classes definitely have their pros and cons, but it really just depends on your preference on which one to take. If you find more joy in moving around and playing sports with your friends, you will most likely find the general gym class to be more enjoyable. But if you like to relax and have a more calm gym class, you will probably like taking yoga.
No matter what, both gym classes are beneficial to your health and wellbeing. It just depends on what you find more enjoyable.
