Snow White and the 7 Reasons to Leave the Theater
To those who thought this would be good, I laugh at you. This should not surprise you, but I am not a fan of the trend at Disney with live-action remakes. So far in the many years they have been making them, there hasn’t been a tolerable one. This is a great achievement by Disney. So when Snow White was announced as the next of these cash grabs, I already knew it was going to be bad. Was I right? Yes. I can honestly say this is the first movie I have ever walked out on in a theater.
If you don’t know the story of Snow White, it follows a young maiden of the same name (this time played by Rachel Zieglar) who lost her parents and whose kingdom has been taken over by the Evil Queen (played by Gal Gadot). As she tries to help people around her, she is sent on a “magical” journey filled with CGI almost as bad as The Polar Express. When I tell you the CGI in this movie is bad, it is an understatement. The CGI for the Dwarfs (they never gave them a name in this movie, so I am just referring to them as dwarfs) is terrifying. I saw this movie with friends, and we all wanted to leave the theater after they appeared.
It also doesn’t help that they did not have a good design either. I understand the struggle of animation to reality, and I give credit to it whenever I see a very good interpretation of an animated character. These Dwarfs are scary. I could see them in a Spirit Halloween store or a Stephen King book. If there is one thing I would love changed with this movie, it's the CGI.
With the original as an afterthought, this movie is not very good. So many plots and ideas are brought up and forgotten just as quickly. Snow White, through the movie, wants to find out what happened to her father, but then she just gives up halfway through. It makes no sense and wastes time that should be given to character development and songs. With that said, the songs are pretty bad. But not all of them. The classics you know and love were done well enough to warrant no issues. The newer songs are the terrible ones. Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen got a song, which I know some would probably make the mistake of thinking the Evil Queen had a song in the original, but she didn’t. Her song in this one is so bad, so poorly sung and acted, it is instant boredom, I was struggling to stay awake or even remotely interested.
So, overall, I think this was just another cash grab by Disney to try to recapture the magic of a film that didn’t need to be remade. Like the others, I do think some things could have been changed and altered to make a better movie. But with all the controversies and problems with the actors during the filming, it just wasn’t gonna work. As for the next live-action cash grab: Lilo and Stitch. I am optimistic about how this story is told. Stay tuned for more. Cinema Hog Out.
