Ecuador government moves amid uncontrollable protests
Following the protests in Ecuador, President Lenin Moreno has announced that his government will be leaving the city of Quito. These protests that were taking place were a result of his move to end state fuel subsidies. The government will be relocating to the southern city of Guayaquil in a public address on Monday. HF Junior, Ellie Lockwood, said, “I can’t believe how uncontrollable these protests are.”
The military had to rescue more than 50 of its members that have been held hostage by these protesters. Recently, Ecuador has seen five full days of unrest over these suggested plans imposed by Moreno. The military is even getting involved as they are seen stepping in to rescue the dozens of personnel who have been held hostage by indigenous groups who have been protesting the end of fuel subsidies. HF Junior, Maya Salzman, said, “ It's so important to have a military rescuing these people in times like these.”
This measure has even unleashed the wrath of labor and transport unions, these unions have been calling for a nationwide strike. As of right now, more than approximately 470 protesters have been arrested so far. The protestors will continue to strike until this unfair order is repealed. When interviewing, Victoria Bell, she said, “People are still sticking to what they believe which oftentimes is crucial.”
On Monday, The Secretary of State in Ecuador, Juan Sebastian Roldan, asked indigenous groups that have been leading these protests to put a complete end to all the violence that has sadly been occurring. It is the indigenous leader’s responsibility to control this situation. Moreno has been recently blaming the foreign influences such as Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and the former president Rafael Correa for the unrest of protests that are consuming the nation. However, the president has no evidence supporting his claims, but he has stated that he will not be going back on his decision to abolish these subsidies.
The frequent incidents of violence have demonstrated that there is an organized political intention that is attempting to destabilize the government and break the constitutional law that has been formed. The protestors are demanding reelection and for Moreno to be kicked out of the presidency. However, despite the controversy, the president has an abundance of support from many business people and the military. He has even moved Ecuador towards the political center after taking over from Correa.
