Teachers fighting for better education and school funds in Chicago
More than 360,000 children did not have school on October 17, in Chicago. These teachers are going on strike. They are angry. They will not sit down. These teachers are fighting for their students, the children. Most teachers have to buy books for their students.
These schools don’t have science books, English books, chrome books, math books, and if the teachers want to teach their kids these teachers have to buy the supplies they are missing. HF Junior, Victoria bell, said, “We often take for granted all the education we are given.”
They need to educate their students with the proper resources that most schools are fortunate to have. Junior, Kieran Tully, said, “I value the determination these teachers have, it’s nice to see them stick up for something and fight for education.” These brave Educators rallied at the Chicago Teacher’s Union headquarters last month in preparation for this strike.
Moselean Parker an educator in Chicago had built up 25 years of frustration for the school district and their lack of educational resources. Parker is among approximately 25,000 educators who went on strike across the city of Chicago on Thursday, demanding what teachers across the country also have been demanding for: smaller class sizes, more support staff, and higher wages and an increase in school funding.
These teachers just want the books, they want the psychologists, they want the nurses, they want social workers and they want better education for their students. These kids can’t read, it’s not only going to be an issue for these students now, but this lack of proper education will affect their education for the rest of their lives. Junior, Allison Brown, said, “ I have no clue what I would be without proper education and at a young age it’s so important to be able to read.”
Education gives us knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. The lack of knowledge and knowing basic skills like reading is causing so much anger in these schools. We take for granted all the stuff we are given. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a proper education. These students have to live with that for the rest of their lives.
