How will the inauguration be different this year?
Most people have already heard about the Capitol storm that occurred on January 6th, but what does this mean for the inauguration that is supposed to happen on January 20th. The attack on the Capitol seems to have been planned out. According to the New York Times article, F.B.I. Warned of Violence Before Siege; More Arrests Made it says, “...after reports that FBI officials in Virginia had [been] warned about a threat of violence the day before the riots, the head of the FBI’s Washington field office, Steven D’Antuono “indicated that the information had quickly been shared with other law enforcement agencies.” It also seems that there are more protests being planned leading up to inauguration day according to the ABC News article, Armed protests being planned at all 50 state capitols, FBI bulletin says. After the breach of security, many people wonder if there is going to be enough security at the inauguration.
According to a BBC article, Inauguration 2021: What happens on the day Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn in? 10,000 national guard troops will be at the capitol and if requested, 5,000 more. For Donald Trump's inauguration, there were only about 8,000 national guard troops. These troops are from six states — New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware. During the inauguration, DC will still be in a state of emergency and there will be tall metal fences that are made to be impossible to climb.
There will also be a reduced number of people allowed because of security and covid guidelines. During President Obama’s inauguration, there were estimated to be about 2 million people there. In past years 200,00o tickets were sold to go to the official ceremony, but for this year there will only be 1,000. Not even Donald Trump will be attending as he tweeted, “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.” This came as a shock to some since there have only been 3 presidents to not go to their successors' inauguration, the last one being Andrew Johnson 152 years ago.
President-elect Joe Biden says that he is “not concerned about my safety, security, or the inauguration” and that he has “great confidence in the Secret Service” and that he is sure they will make sure the inauguration “goes off safely.” Even with all these security measures, people are still worried about his safety. No one knows what will happen on January 20th, but hopefully, everything goes according to plan and no one is hurt or injured.
