Everything that happened on January 6, 2021

The media in 2021 is already off to a wild start. January 6, 2021 is possibly the longest day so far this year. News after news hit media everywhere as incidents and drama spurred on Wednesday.

Early in the morning, it was reported that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were getting a divorce. On the 5th, sources revealed that Kim was planning for divorce and hiring a lawyer. Then on the 6th, somebody on TikTok posted a video claiming to know that Kanye was having a relationship with a popular beauty guru, leading many to believe that guru is Jeffree Star. Star has been a Youtube personality for years, has launched his own makeup line and has had run-ins with cancel culture on social media. The 2 haven’t been living together but have seen each other for the sake of their 4 children. A close source to Kim and Kanye stated that, “There is absolutely no truth to Jeffree and Kanye rumors." As the rumor blew up on Twitter.

Ava Louise, the girl who posted the TikTok containing the rumor, is considered an internet troll after she filmed herself licking a toilet seat for a “Coronavirus challenge”. This caused people to distrust the rumor. None have commented on the rumors except for Star’s post to twitter saying, “I'm ready for Sunday Service.”

Jon Ossoff won the Georgia Senate election, beating Republican David Perdue. Ossoff, 33, is now the youngest man to enter the Senate since president-elect Joe Biden in 1973. This now means each party has 50 senators, leading Kamala Harris, vice-president elect to be the deciding vote in legislative matters. This is the first Democratic majority since 2014. As well in Georgia, Raphael Warnock defeated Republican Kelly Loeffler. But, these victories were overshadowed by the mobs in Washington DC.

Notably the wildest thing to happen yet this year, people breached the Capitol to share their grievances due to Donald Trump’s loss. This forced people to evacuate and shelter in place. Luckily, staff were able to grab electoral college ballots, saving them from the chance of destruction. Senator Tammy Duckworth shared to Twitter a picture of boxes of ballots that were protected. He wrote, “Electoral college ballots rescued from the Senate floor. If our capable floor staff hadn’t grabbed them, they would have been burned by the mob.”

As this was going on, people noticed that Vice President Mike Pence unfollowed Trump on Twitter. People noticed he follows 48 people but during the time of the mobs breaching the Capitol, his following count was 47 and it appeared Trump was not one of them. It seemed moments later his following count was back up and it’s unclear if he had unfollowed Trump or not. People on Twitter were quick to tweet and speculate what was going on.

At the Capitol, 4 people have been confirmed dead due to the protests. 3 died from medical emergencies and 1 woman was shot and killed by police. At least 52 people have been arrested, according to the chief, the cause of arrest is most likely due to breaking the curfew put in place. Mayor Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington D.C. set a 12 hour curfew. The police recovered 2 pipe bombs, one at the Republican National Committee headquarters and another at the Democratic National Committee. A cooler with guns was also found on Capitol grounds.

Trump supporters breached Congress, forcing people inside to shelter in place in the House as both chambers were formally counting the electoral college votes of the 2020 election. At least 14 officers were injured, according to the chief none of the injuries were too serious. Police are receiving criticism and backlash at the lack of urgency to deal with the mobs at the Capitol. The violent mobs broke windows, climbed into the building, and were aggressive towards law enforcement.
