Golden Globe Nominations 2020
Golden Globe nominations were just released on Monday and I am very excited!!!! I absolutely love award shows. All the celebrities, the outfits, the awards, the movies and shows getting awarded, and of course, the red carpet!!!! I mean what’s not to love. This year is a very exciting year because I have seen a lot of the movies and TV shows getting nominated this year!
The movie that had the most nominations was “Marriage Story,” a Netflix film that was just released the other day! “Marriage Story” is about a couple struggling through a divorce while still trying to be a family for their young son. It received 6 nominations in total including Best Motion Picture for a drama film. The main stars of the film, Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, both received nominations for Best Actress and Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama. Laura Dern also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for her role in the film as well.
I have just recently seen “Marriage Story” and I thought it was an incredibly real story about something that affects most families in the world. Junior Sophia DiPrima says, “This movie was so emotional, it felt so real and uncomfortable at times. They deserve all of their nominations.”
“Marriage Story” isn’t the only Netflix film that received nominations however. Netflix received 34 nominations in total with 17 being for films, the company with the most nominations this year. Another Netflix film that received multiple nominations was “The Irishman.” It is about a hit man looking back at his life in a notorious crime family. The film with its amazing cast, like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, received 5 nominations in total. While the film is 3 hours and 29 minutes long and I guess you could say it’s not quite right for school viewing (I mean it’s rated R and about the mafia), the reviews have been pretty good (as you can tell by its multiple nominations). Junior Melina Sandel says, “while I have only seen the first hour of the movie it was interesting, but it was slow.”
Movies that also hit big with the nominations this year was “The Joker” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which both received Best Motion Picture nominations. “The Joker” starring Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker has been one of the most talked about movies this year. The movie is about The Joker’s dark backstory on how he became the iconic villain that he is. Junior Andrew Kudler says, “I did like this movie, but I felt it was really dark- darker than I expected.” He also received a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” also has a star-studded cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. The movie takes place in 1969 Hollywood where a fading actor and his stunt double try to get back into the limelight.
The TV shows nominated this year are returning nominees “Killing Eve,” “Fleabag,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” with also some new nominees like “The Politician” and “Morning Show.” Kit Harington also received his first nomination for his role as Jon Snow in “Game of Thrones” which had its final season this year, but does not have any more nominations which is weird considering the numerous nominations it has gotten in the past (it’s probably because of its unsatisfying final season which should be a whole other article by itself).
Anyways, the award show season is swiftly underway and it’s definitely going to be a fun season. The SAG award nominations were also just released and the nominations look pretty much the same. Will these be the same nominations we see for the Oscars early next year? Who knows (the academy can be weird some years--like when they screwed up the Best Picture winner a couple of years ago that was hilarious). The 77th annual Golden Globes will be held on Sunday, January 5th, 2020 and Ricky Gervais will be hosting the ceremony. Mark your calendars!
