Grey's Anatomy: Another Character Returns

*Spoiler Warning*

In the promo from the third episode of the 17th season of Grey’s Anatomy, they revealed another character from Meredith’s past would visit her on the beach. With so many people dying throughout the show, there were numerous options of who it could be.

Fans speculated that Lexie Grey, Meredith’s half-sister would return. Lexie died in the plane crash of season 8. Many had hoped for the return of Lexie since Derek had returned. Fans of the show were shocked to see the beloved George O’Malley on the beach.

The pure heart break and awe of seeing George leaning on the rail of the lifeguard tower shocked many. George died in season 6 which brought so many to tears back then. It was exciting for many to see T.R. Knight’s smiling face on our screen in 2020. Seeing one of the M.A.G.I.C members (which stands for the names of the original interns from season 1) after the rest of them had left the show, brought feelings of nostalgia.

There were some loving scenes between Meredith and George, it seemed as if no time had passed. When George died in season 6 after being hit by a bus while saving a woman’s life, they hadn’t realized until the last minute that it was George, so no one got a proper goodbye. Luckily in the dream sequence Meredith was able to tell him the impact he had on her life. She said, “I was devastated when you died...You changed my life George.”

George revealed that he had been watching over Meredith since his death. He recalled watching them laugh at his funeral while celebrating his life rather than mourning it. He also revealed he had been watching over her kids which melted the viewers’ hearts.

One of the great scenes from the episode included George, Meredith, Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey sitting on the beach. Webber and Bailey were pictured on the beach despite being alive because they were in Meredith’s hospital room as she continues to battle COVID-19. It was heartwarming to see George and Bailey together after so long because their friendship in the early seasons was amazing.

In the episode, DeLuca and Altman discover a trial that is going on to find a cure for the virus, and suggests that Meredith be put in the trial as her condition worsens. Meredith had put Richard in charge of her medical decisions while she was still lucid. He contemplates the decision to admit her in the trial throughout the episode. He heard Meredith talking to George in her sleep and realized how bad her condition was and decided to put her in the trial. In the promo for the next episode, Meredith seems to be getting slightly better, so there is hope for this trial. Of course because the season is based around the pandemic that is going on now, there isn’t exactly a cure yet so the question of how will this storyline go may remain unanswered for a while.

In the episode, Tom Koracick tested positive for COVID-19. At the end of the episode, he is seen shivering on the floor. His condition in the episode wasn’t too bad until the end when Teddy Altman came to visit him. The promo for the next episode shows him being taken to the hospital. It also shows Bailey’s mother being brought to the hospital. Is it possible one of them will die in an upcoming episode?

T.R. Knight took to Instagram following the episode and said, “George O’Malley will always claim my heart. Thank you to Ellen, Chandra, Jim, Krista, and all the familiar faces for once again sharing your beautiful light.”

He followed up in another post about Ellen Pompeo, the star of the show, “Ellen is the kind of actor I’m endlessly grateful to act with. She’s the embodiment of truth. George and Meredith love each other, for sure, but I don’t think he can hold a candle to [the] love I have for Ellen.”

There are still a lot of things to happen this season according to Camilla Luddington, the actress who plays Jo Wilson. She took to twitter on Thursday to say, “Ok how are u guys feeling?!!! This season only gets more crazy…”
