Covid Friendly Holiday Activities
With the pandemic still in place, this holiday season will be different than years in the past. The holidays are a time to give back while spending time with friends and family. Although many people have to follow protocols and safety guidelines to limit the spread of Covid-19, there are still plenty of activities that can be done that are safe.
Light shows are a great way to social distance while having fun. You can stay in your car and drive around neighborhoods with crazy colored lights and decorations. Some houses even have music to go along with their lights. There are places nearby dedicated to this event such as the Jones Beach ‘Magic of Lights.’ This is a huge open space where cars line up to drive through the mesmerizing lights. It is super fun and safe which is a bonus.
Senior Maya Salzman said, “I have been attending the light show for the past two years, it is definitely fun and safe during this time. I think it’s great that this is still a holiday activity that can be done, so it has a sense of normalcy to it.”
Another activity that is on the rise is Netflix Party. Netflix Party is a great way to watch movies with friends, while being at home. You can download it very easily on any computer and it takes seconds. While the movie is playing, there is a chat box that you and your friends and family can type in. This is a great interactive way to watch holiday movies while still communicating with friends or family while being home.
Senior Amanda Quenneville said, “I heard about Netflix Party towards the beginning of quarantine and began to use it a lot. It is a super fun way to still talk with friends and watch your favorite movies together.”
Holiday gift swaps are always popular during this time of year. This can still be done, but a safer way would be to have the gift exchanges outside. A mother of two, Meghan Harper from Dallas Texas is planning to do this on Christmas day.
Harper explained, “We will mask up and stay at least six feet apart while we open gifts. My husband even got an outdoor light-up tree at Costco for the occasion. I’m not comfortable with us being together unmasked, so no shared meals, but at least this is something we can do together.”
These are only a handful of activities that can be done this season, and there are many other ways to make fun traditions safe this year. Hopefully these ideas can be used to have a fun holiday with the benefit of staying safe.
