Is My Hero Academia Coming to an End?

Could the popular series, My Hero Academia, be coming to an end in the near future? At the beginning of January the author of My Hero Academia, Horikoshi, mentioned at a fan event, “I think perhaps the story will be heading towards its conclusion soon, but I’ll make sure you can enjoy it until then!”

Considering the current state of the characters in the recent manga chapters this came as a shock to many fans. The manga is currently in the middle of its ‘War Arc’ which has been one of the craziest and heart-wrenching things we have seen in My Hero Academia so far– with several characters dying and the status of many of our favorite characters not looking so great. Considering that the War Arc in itself hasn’t even been completed yet, for Horikoshi to say the manga may be ending soon leads many people to suspect a time skip or jump of sorts in the upcoming chapters. In the first episode of the series, the show starts with the voice of an aged up voice of our main character, Izuku Midoriya, explaining how “this is the story of how he became the number one hero.” Therefore a time skip has been anticipated for some time but it’s unclear how the current conflict will resolve as of now and a time skip within these circumstances would result in an overall unsatisfying conclusion.

However, Horikoshi is also known for not always meaning what he says. In 2020 after the release of the My Hero Academia movie: Hero’s Rising, Horikoshi expressed that Hero’s Rising would be the last movie for the series. However, at the end of 2020, he contradicted this statement with a teaser on Twitter clearly indicating that there will be a third movie following the three main characters: Izuku Midoriya, Shoto Todoroki, and Katsuki Bakugo.

If you are concerned about the future of the show, do not worry! Even if the manga does conclude, the anime will still be continuing for years to come! While the manga is currently up to chapter 296, the show itself has only covered up to chapter 190. Therefore, the show has a promising future with the possibility of many more seasons depending on how much longer the manga continues.

March 27th brings the start of the show’s fifth season, which many fans have been anticipating for almost a year. Junior Anna Perz says, “I’m so excited about the new season’s ‘training arc,’ but also all the upcoming arcs in the show! From what I’ve seen in the manga, the story gets even crazier and involved so I can’t wait to see it animated!”

Horikoshi ended the My Hero Academia fan event with a hopeful message to fans saying, “Thank you for supporting BNHA [Boku no Hero Academia] for so many years! In the next year, Season 5, another movie, an Exhibition, and various other things are currently being planned for the series.” Despite the sad fact that My Hero Academia may be coming to its conclusion soon, the future of My Hero Academia is still looking very bright!
