2021 Golden Globes Recap
The 78th Golden Globe Awards was held on Sunday, February 28th to kick off the start of award show season. The award show was done mostly over zoom calls and some pre-recorded segments due to the pandemic. All award shows come with many awkward and hilarious moments and this year was certainly not lacking.
The Golden Globes award the best television shows and movies of the year along with the actors and actresses in them. They are given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which is a group of international journalists. The HFPA has come under fire recently because out of their 87 members, none of them are Black. Many celebrities have spoken out, some even during their own speeches after they win, calling for change.
The event was hosted by Golden Globes host alums, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They hosted the event from opposite sides of the country, one in New York and one in Los Angeles, and it didn’t go too horribly. Their opening monologue did, however, rip into the HFPA and shows like Netflix’s “Emily in Paris” which was nominated for best show despite negative critic reviews. Sophomore Annie Forestiero says, “Tina and Amy were very funny as their humor was the perfect amount of slander.”
Netflix did however win big in the television category with shows like “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” winning multiple awards. Just like their Emmys sweep, the hit show “Schitt’s Creek” was awarded globes for the final season. These three shows dominated across best series and acting categories.
In the film categories, the biggest winners were “Nomadland” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Each winning best picture-drama and best picture-comedy or musical, respectfully. The director of “Nomadland,” Chloe Zhao won the best director award becoming the first Asian woman to do so and the first woman in over 30 years.
The best actress and best-supporting actress winners were a shock to the film community. Senior Sophia DiPrima says, “I lowkey love surprise wins. Everyone’s reactions are always great!” Jodie Foster took home the award for best-supporting actress-drama over predicted frontrunners like Glenn Close and Amanda Seyfried. Andra Day’s surprise win was a welcoming shock as she became only the second Back woman to win the best actress-drama award, a significantly low record.
The most memorable moment of the night was the late Chadwick Boseman winning the best actor-drama award for his last role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” His wife, Taylor Simone Ledward accepted on his behalf and gave a heartfelt tribute to him. Senior Isabella Mule says, “His win was incredibly deserved and his wife’s speech was so touching.” His globe win has seemed to set up a sweep of awards for the late actor as his last performance was highly praised.
The 78th Golden Globes was a mess as some celebrities didn’t really get dressed up, some rambled on in their speeches, and some speeches weren’t even heard since there were microphone issues. But that’s just perfect for the year that we have had so I guess it works. This is just the start of a weird award season so get ready for some significantly memorable moments.
