Reigning National league MVP Christian Yelich out for season, other MLB news

Last night was a magnet for MLB headlines, news, and opinions as the season starts to head to a close. With only three more weeks until the Postseason, teams across the league are suffering injuries, setting records, and creating fan drama.

Although the Milwaukee Brewers won their game against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, they suffered a big loss in their depth charts. Reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich suffered a fractured kneecap in the first inning after fouling off a pitch. He was on the ground for several minutes until he was assisted up and off of the field. After a physician’s visit, it was announced that Yelich would not be able to play for the rest of the season.  According to ESPN.com, Manager Craig Counsel was devastated by the news and said, “We have to move forward. We feel awful for Christian. That's the thing kinda resonating with me right now is he's a special player, and it's a joy to watch him play every day”. And he's the best at what he does. So not being able to see that every day is definitely no good.” The Brewers will definitely be affected by the news, as they are tight in a wild card playoff race with other teams like the Phillies, Diamondbacks, and the Mets. Losing their star player could affect their playoff hopes and maybe even knock the team out of contention.

Another headline that broke Tuesday night is that the MLB’s playoff picture is starting to form, as the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers have officially won their division. In part of a very strong team including power hitters Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy, plus pitchers Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw have propelled the team over a somewhat weak NL West division. This division championship achieved by the Dodgers marks the seventh consecutive time the team won their division; a feat only done 3 times. On September 10th, the Dodgers were 18.5 games ahead of the next-ranked team, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

On Tuesday night, the New York Yankees blasted 6 Home Runs in their 12-11 loss against the Detroit Tigers. Those home runs tied the team up with the Minnesota Twins’ single season Home Run Record of 276 home runs. The two teams are notorious for hitting home runs, as each team has many sluggers and power hitters. In an era that has seen more home runs than ever, it will be hard to decide which team will win this home run battle, which has been going on since the season started in April.

In the end, the MLB, or any sports, in general, are very unpredictable, but they always create great headlines.
