NFL Combine Quarterbacks Recap

The NFL Combine was from February 27-March 4. The best college players all come out to Lucas Oil Stadium home of the Indianapolis Colts, to perform for all 32 NFL teams. They use the combine to benchmark where all the athletes stand amongst each other. They are tested in the 40 yard dash, Vertical Jump, Broad Jump, 3 Cone Drill, Shuttle Run, and Bench Press. This year’s class has great talent at the quarterback position.

Ranking at number 10 of the top 10 quarterbacks is Steven Montez of the University of Colorado. Montez came into the combine at 6 feet 4 inches, and weighing in at 231 pounds. He ran a 4.68 40 yard dash, which was the third fastest among his position. He did fairly well in all of the other drills as well. Montez had a pretty good season last year, and he is a big and strong QB. Most experts have him going around the sixth or seventh round.

Ranking at number 9 is Cole McDonald out of the University of Hawaii. McDonald came in at 6 feet 3 inches and weighed in at 215 pounds. He ran the fastest 40 out of all of the quarterbacks clocking 4.58 seconds. He had a 36 inch vertical and a broad jump of 10 ft 1 inch. McDonald was the third most athletic QB in the class. He is projected to go after the top 125 picks.

At number 8 is Anthony Gordon out of Washington State University. He elected not to work out at the combine. He had a great season last year  5,579 yards and 48 touchdowns. His absence from the combine doesn’t change his draft stock at all and he is projected to go around day 3.

Coming in at number 7 is Jake Fromm out of the University of Georgia. Fromm measured in at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing in at 219 pounds. Fromm did not perform up to expectations. His hands were not smaller  than the typical 9 inch hands that teams are looking for, and he ran a 5.01 40 which was the slowest in his class at his position. His intelligence and accuracy are things that can save his lack of athleticism. He is thought to not have the potential to be a franchise QB and is expected to be drafted around the third and fourth round.

Ranking at number 6 is Jacob Eason out of Washington. He came in at 6 feet 6 inches and weighed 231 pounds. He ran a 4.89 40 which is a little less than average for an NFL QB. The biggest concern for NFL scouts is his lack of agility which is crucial for quarterbacks in the pocket. He had the slowest time in the 3 cone drill for quarterbacks since 1999. Easons arm strength is the only thing that could save him. He is expected to go after the top 100.

Ranking at number 5 is Jalen Hurts out of the University of Oklahoma. Hurts measured in at 6 feet 1 inch and weighed in at 222 pounds.  He had the second fastest 40 for QBs running a 4.59. He had a 125 inch broad jump which is very impressive. Hurts is expected to go around the 2 round.

At number 4 is Jordan Love out of Utah State University. Love measured in at 6 feet 4 inches and weighed 224. He ran 4.74 40 and had a 35.5 inch vertical. He also had a 118 inch broad jump. With this great performance he could be in the top 10 or the top 25.

At number 3 is Justin Herbert out of the University of Oregon. Herbert weighed in at 6 feet 6 inches and weighed in at 236 pounds.. He  ran a 4.68 40, had 35 and a half inches on the vertical and 123 inches broad jump. He will most likely go in the top 10 of the draft.

At number 2 is Tua Tagovailoa out of the University of Alabama. Tua did not perform at the combine due to a hip injury that he acquired during the season.  By now though his hip is completely healed and he didn’t have any loss of blood flow. That is huge for him because that was a major concern that teams had. He also measured in at 6 foot which was a big thing for him. He is expected to go anywhere in the top 5.

Finally at number 1 is Joe Burrow out of Louisiana State University. Joe Burrow was this year’s Heisman winner; he is 6 foot 3 inches and 221 pounds. He is very accurate and is great in the pocket but can also run. Burrow did not perform at the combine because he has nothing to gain for working out in front of NFL teams. He is projected to go first to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The NFL Draft begins on April 23, 2020. Tune in to see where these quarterbacks get drafted.
