Dying Coral Reefs and their Impact on the Environment
Coral reefs, often called the rainforests of the sea, are some of the most productive ecosystems on earth. They occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor, and are home to more than a quarter of all marine species and over 4000 types of fish make their home in coral reefs. The global economic value of the reefs is around $375 billion a year, and they provide food and resources for more than 500 million people in over 100 countries. Unfortunately, the coral reefs are in a crisis. According to Harborfields High School student, Brooke Buda, “We need to protect the sea and the coral reef. It teaches us so much, and we rely on it for so many things.”
Cameroon Jails Transgenders Solely Based on Sexuality
In recent news, a court located in Cameroon sentenced two transgender women on Tuesday to five years in prison for “attempted homosexuality.” They were sentenced for this reason and for other offenses such as the clothes they wore in a restaurant. Which is completely inappropriate and unjust. Senior Allison Brown said, “It's crazy that people would discriminate against these women for offenses such as clothes and their sexuality.”
Young Whale Trapped in the London River
In recent news, a young whale has been found trapped in the London River. The whale who is struggling in this unfamiliar environment has begun to deteriorate in condition. As it was seen suffering, it was later put to sleep by veterinary experts.
French Journalist Kidnapped
In recent news, a French Journalist who disappeared in Mali last month said in a video that aired on social media platforms Wednesday that he had been kidnapped. This French Journalist was kidnapped by a Jidhadist group and pleaded for help from the French authorities. For those who may not know, The primary aim of jihad as warfare is not the conversion of non-Muslims to Islam by force, but rather the expansion and defense of the Islamic state. Senior Allison Brown stated, “For what reason would they kidnap him?”
Vandalism in Floyd's Hometown
In recent news, a mural of George Floyd in Houston was vandalized. This vandalism was carried out overnight and ultimately defaced Floyd’s face in the mural. This painting in Floyd’s hometown was covered with a racial epithet which was then covered up and the painting restored by the artist who created it. Senior Allison Brown stated, “It is unbelievable that people would even think to vandalize that.”
Recent Shooting Sparks a Conversation About Anti-Asian Bias
On Wednesday, March 17th, a man went on a shooting frenzy at three spas in and around Atlanta, Georgia. This incident has sparked a conversation about anti-Asian racism in America and an increase in violence against Asian-Americans since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rallies and protests aiming to “Stop Asian Hate” have ensued across the United States in response to this shooting.
Change and Continued Action (Editorial)
We all know that America has been facing mass shootings for awhile now. It often seems like there will be no end to it, due to the fact that there is no enforcement for stopping this violence. There has to be an end to this culture of violence because none of this is normal. Senior Allison Brown stated, “The violence we have seen this year alone must stop.”

In recent news, Cuomo was accused of unwanted advances for a third time. This third woman, Anna Ruch, has accused Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo of unwanted advances in 2019, adding to an escalating crisis facing the governor in the wake of two sexual harassment allegations. In 2019, both Ruch and Cuomo were seen at a wedding reception in New York City, at this wedding reception, Cuomo was seen placing his hands around Ruch’s face. Senior Allison Brown stated, “Two now three sexual allegation, I wonder what is in store for him.”

Getting a Covid-19 vaccine appointment is a difficult process, as millions of people are competing for just thousands of COVID-19 daily doses. Some state-run vaccination sites, among them Jones Beach, open Thursday at 8 a.m., but Long Island residents report the sign-up system is always crashing.

Our forests are in serious trouble, whether it's from the increase in storms, or wildfires, millions of acres of land are being destroyed. It is urgent that we act on this issue. Last year alone the United States lost millions of trees solely due to these forest fires.
