Wacky Weather in Turkey
Turkey has just been hit with some pretty gruesome storms. In every single province there have been structures destroyed and people killed. More specifically in the provinces of Aegean and Marmara, which are located in the western part of the country and right next to the Sea of Marmara, which then connects to the Aegean sea. This has definitely disrupted the lives of many people, along with both ferry and sea traffic.
The winds were a total of 130 kilometers per hour (80 miles per hour) in Istanbul. 15 million people reside in the city while, “four people, including one foreign national lost their lives and 19 others were injured,” (Hurriyat). These winds were not just in one place but affected the entire nation, some hitting 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour).
Television images showed that this fierce storm damaged 12 cars, knocked down 52 road signs and traffic lights. Blew away 33 roofs and even uprooted 192 trees. The government is definitely anticipating that these storms are only going to be getting worse especially due to climate change across the globe.
All this information was happening this past Monday but for Tuesday the, “Turkish State Meteorological Service (TSMS) issued warnings for 67 of the 81 provinces, forecasting extreme weather conditions, from rainfall to strong winds and storms,” (Daily Sabah). Hopefully in the next couple of days this weather will subside and return to peaceful skies. Let this be a warning to other nations around the world- something must be done about the increasing storms across the globe!
