Keeping up with fashion trends today may be a little expensive. So if you’re looking for ways to save money and at the same time look trendy, here are a few affordable DIY fashion trends.

One way to make your plain boring sweatpants look more colorful, is to make them tie-dye sweatpants. In store tie-dye sweatpants usually range from $20-$50. Instead of paying so much money, you can easily do it yourself at home.

The price range for this DIY is $10-$20, depending on the type of sweatpants you buy. Walmart and Target sell inexpensive sweatpants and hoodies that this DIY would work well with. Besides the clothing item of your choice you'll also need: rubber bands and tie-dye (easily found at Target, Walmart, or Michaels).

You will want to rinse your clothing in water first, then put rubber bands on the item in any pattern. In a USA Today article Spencer Morecroft says, “Tying your clothes up with rubber bands will help you achieve the perfect tie-dye look”.

After that is done you can apply the tie-dye. Once the tie-dye is applied you will want to put your clothing item in a bag to prevent making a mess for 6-8 hours. You can then wash the clothing item and now you have turned your boring shirt or pants into a more colorful piece of clothing.

Ever wondered how to spice up your plain pair of denim jeans? This DIY is for you. All you’ll need is a pair of jeans, acrylic paint, and some paint brushes. In a USA Today article Allison Deyette suggests where the best placement would be to paint on jeans, “Wherever you're going to paint on any pair of jeans, look for less stitching. The more blank the space, the better it acts as your canvas."

You have complete creative freedom when painting on jeans.  You can paint flowers, flames, smiley faces, and many more designs of your choice onto your pair of jeans.

Another wonderful way to make a plain shirt look more than plain is to iron on a picture onto it. All you need to do is find a picture of your choice on google and print it out. You will need an iron and transfer paper as well. It is best to use dark shirts for bright colored images and vice versa.  You will want to make sure that you flip the image before printing so that the image doesn’t look mirrored when ironed onto the shirt. USA Today says, “Pattern suggests using cotton shirts for the best results, as the required heat may melt polyester or acrylic.”

These are just a few ways to spice up your plain clothing that you may have just lying in your closet.
