ATTENTION FRESHMEN: Here lies the best way to survive your first year in the Big Leagues

Welcome to your first year in High School HF class of 2021! I know the school and the seniors seem large and scary, but soon enough you’ll know your schedule like the back of your hand If you’re lucky, some of the seniors will take you under their wing and show you the ropes (crazy, right?)

I, only being a sophomore, must admit that I don’t know all the shortcuts and secrets of High School, but I do know one HUGE piece of information that may help all of you make your freshmen year less taxing: JOIN CLUBS!

I understand that it may be a little late for me to encourage you to try out for fall sports this season, seeing as how they began in August, but maybe the rest of this article will inspire you for the winter or spring seasons. I talked to some of the freshman on varsity and on JV sports for fall, and they said that being on a team has only made their transition to High School easier.

Brooke Buda (JV girls soccer) said, “Being on soccer made it less stressful on the first day; knowing that if I got lost or I needed help that I had people that I could turn to.”

Not only does sports teams and clubs help you make friends and allows you feel more comfortable, it also helps you figure out what your likes and dislikes are. You may surprise yourself! Perhaps you’ll find yourself enjoying something that you never pictured yourself doing. The best part is, you don’t always need to be with people you are already friends with.

There are so many different groups of people in this school with countless different interests. You’ll never know where you truly fit in until you try. So consider branching out!

Gracie Heil (Sophomore), who joined art club at the beginning of last year says, “I always knew I liked art, but I never pictured myself enjoying it as much as I did; the projects we did were so cool. We even got to paint ceramic bowls!”

Hey, I never thought of myself as someone who would write for the school paper, but I took a chance by joining the club this year and I can honestly tell you that I’ve never enjoyed something more. Moral of the story: Join HF clubs. The fun you’ll have and the memories you’ll make is priceless.
